Rotor Tip Disensitization
The main goal of this project is the reduction of the Tip Leakage Flow impact on compressor. Tip Leakage Flow is a result of secondary flows on the rotor tip and can cause significant losses, as it curls up into a vortex, leading to passage blockage and reduction of the surge margin. The phenomenon has been widely studied throughout the decades and various methods to limit it have been implemented on compressors, numerically and experimentally, such as casing treatments. However, these methods lead to a deterioration of the compressor efficiency. The project aims to develop new methods for reducing Tip Leakage Flow, focusing mainly on the rotor tip, without negatively impacting the compressor efficiency. The aerodynamic properties of the new geometrical modifications, applied on axial compressors, will be numerically assessed during the project.
