In collaboration with the student group ‘Impetus Sailing’, the LCC organized a project seminar this semester. The topic was the mast for the boat that will compete in the 1001 Vela Cup 2025. Through concept studies, design and production, the students substituted the lower aluminum half of the mast with a FRP solution.
The mast was braided, locally reinforced at various load application points and infiltrated with a reactive thermoplastic. The issue of sustainability was considered by using recyclable materials, a reactive thermoplastic and basalt fibres. After the successful final presentation of the project, the mast was handed over to the ‘Impetus Sailing’ team.
The project seminar concept enables TUM to support student groups in cooperation with departments. Learning success is significantly increased through topics to which the students have a direct connection.
In addition, it is always fun to organize such an event with motivated students. The LCC is already looking forward to the next round.
