The Space Station Design Workshop (SSDW) is an intercultural and interdisciplinary workshop where participants need to design a space station within one week. Since 1996, it has been held at prestigious institutions such as the University of Stuttgart, ESTEC, Supaero, ISU, and the University of Sydney. Since 2024, it is co-organized by the University of Stuttgart’s Institute of Space Systems (IRS) and the Technical University of Munich’s (TUM) Professorship for Human Spaceflight Technology (HSP). The workshop emphasizes technical expertise, teamwork, and intercultural competence, preparing students for real-world challenges in space station and human spaceflight design.
In 2024, the workshop took place for the very first time at the TUM Aerospace Campus in Ottobrunn, Germany. It was funded by DLR, the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy and the Technical University of Munich.
In 2025, the workshop will take place in Stuttgart.
